Serving authentic japanese ramen, lines during dinner - late dinner even! - tend to be long. In our case, 2 hours long.<br />
<br />
We tried the miso ramen and the shio ramen. Both were really good with juicy pieces of chashu. If you frequently crave for ramen, mendokoro is a must visit!<br />

We had the chance to visit the three parks in recent years and each visit was a blast of course :) But, if I had to choose, Orlando would be the best one to visit. <br />
<br />
Here are my insights on visiting the the three Wizarding worlds:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJFT3_l4_wcx4JvTULdo_l0TsEekSmqtrC0oFU9OQ9ScptVZ6mmWjOhE5bPtN_S-9O4T3d4zBVwDcqNf4fXFjY1v__CB0U5rGNjeN1GVY9GXjcXMVzJF5CPEl2AqmUQXZuM_q83ZPLtEy/s1600/Screenshot_2016-11-13-09-35-24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJFT3_l4_wcx4JvTULdo_l0TsEekSmqtrC0oFU9OQ9ScptVZ6mmWjOhE5bPtN_S-9O4T3d4zBVwDcqNf4fXFjY1v__CB0U5rGNjeN1GVY9GXjcXMVzJF5CPEl2AqmUQXZuM_q83ZPLtEy/s320/Screenshot_2016-11-13-09-35-24.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Orlando was the biggest 'coz it had Diagon Alley (must see: the Gringotts fire breathing dragon) You also get the chance to poke around at Knockturn Alley which was really creepy even in the daytime. Another must see in the Orlando park was the Hogwarts Express train connecting Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. It was an attraction all in itself! Wouldn't want to spoil it for you guys so that's all I'm saying :p<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWHd8qEpFsp1z9Nc1F74yNY0zNdaTfs0k3KDrIEKc62Ml-xqzDF_ZEEkbMnyYAcdMpWXj04TXrDEp5sedDd3gDQVPmynPJ0L_07iWpRJcU-1Ad0nqXsyCl7RwVLeHvI95BqmsixpPI9rPS/s1600/Screenshot_2016-11-13-09-34-31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWHd8qEpFsp1z9Nc1F74yNY0zNdaTfs0k3KDrIEKc62Ml-xqzDF_ZEEkbMnyYAcdMpWXj04TXrDEp5sedDd3gDQVPmynPJ0L_07iWpRJcU-1Ad0nqXsyCl7RwVLeHvI95BqmsixpPI9rPS/s320/Screenshot_2016-11-13-09-34-31.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Hollywood was the newest and had the same rides with Orlando. It was smaller of course. But I think there are plans to expand the park in the future. There weren't a lot of people when we visited and we had the chance to visit the Osaka and Florida parks first so we weren't that impressed with this one. STILL, we had a great time here. Any Potterhead would enjoy a visit :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh29X6ct4Z1vLjOKNApjIIyJYteMtKRxDT8w89e7ofQSTYYyT5R8Qh0Tj7sH7qft1sVKvfODLAq4N79MYtx2BR67hYHb7u71OaGuxPtpsLQvdVtS8YS-Vu-RSbW3EA84ic0-dEVnfdce7Y-/s1600/Screenshot_2016-11-13-09-37-27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh29X6ct4Z1vLjOKNApjIIyJYteMtKRxDT8w89e7ofQSTYYyT5R8Qh0Tj7sH7qft1sVKvfODLAq4N79MYtx2BR67hYHb7u71OaGuxPtpsLQvdVtS8YS-Vu-RSbW3EA84ic0-dEVnfdce7Y-/s320/Screenshot_2016-11-13-09-37-27.jpg" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Finally, Osaka was similar in size to Hollywood and had the most people! We came during the first year of its opening and it was craaaaazzy. There was a scheduled visit time, and you had to go through the Forbidden Forest which also functioned as a lining area(?) for the timed entry. In total, I guess we had to line up for around 5 hours. Even Honeydukes had an hour and a half line just to enter the shop! But, this was the first park we visited so we were fangirling and had butterflies in our stomachs the whole time we were there.<br />
<br />
All three had Butterbeer (get the frozen one!) and Gillywater kiosks. They all had the same street performances - the street choir, and the Beauxbatons parade. The shops were the same, except for the one in Knockturn. As for the rides, they were all similar, but the ones in Japan were, of course, dubbed in Japanese. Hehe.<br />
<br />
My takeaway? All were worth it! :) Orlando's is the best of the three, but let's see. In a few years, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Hollywood might just turn out to be the best one to visit.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I tried checking it out previously and have been back around 3 times, but have always failed to post about the experience.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So let's delve into the Genki Sushi experience! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">First, when you go in the establishment, the staff would direct you to a booth and if it is your first time, they will also give directions on how to order. All the booths have a tablet connected to the restaurant's system. This is where you can look at the menu, order your dish, and request for the bill. IMO, this is super convenient for introverts - less human contact. haha.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Then, your food arrives via a small shinkansen aka bullet train. After taking your dish, you press a flashing button to send back the train to the kitchen. Trust me, it's super fun.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I've tried quite a few of their dishes but I recommend getting the seared salmon with black pepper, the crunch salmon nori roll, and shrimp garlic butter sushi. The rice bowls are also actually good and can probably feed two not-so-hungry adults :)</span><br />

<div style="padding: 5px; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="padding: 5px; text-align: center;">
Manhattan's really one of my favorite places. It's very busy, sometimes stinky, beautiful and grungy all at the same time. And I love it more due to Central Park. So this summer when we went to NYC I asked by family to go with me around the park, but my companions didn't want to walk the long way back to our hotel. So we just ended up going to the Brooklyn Diner after around 30 mins of walking :)</div>
<div style="padding: 5px; text-align: center;">
The place was located halfway from Times Square and Central park and they had a long line for breakfast. We waited for around 20 mins. When we got inside, the place was super packed!<br />
<br />

The next day, my sister and I wanted to go downtown/ the chinatown area just to check the feel/ ambience of the place. We took the bus from the NY Public Library and the traffic was really bad. While there, we went to check out Casey Neistat's studio (fangirls haha) and got Ice Cream from the Chinatown Ice Cream Co (apparently, you pass by a police precinct/ jail and we saw a man in cuffs being brought in by the police)<br />
<div style="padding: 5px; text-align: center;">
<br />
After, we just took the subway to Times Sqaure to watch Matilda, which was really good. The actors were great, especially the kid who played the lead. If you get the chance to watch it you should!<br />

I really thought that she was just another pretty Hollywood actress and I'm really happy that she proved me wrong :) She co-founded an eco-brand which originally catered to new moms & dads, but now seems to be growing to become a brand which a family can grow old with. Her company, The Honest Co., sells eco-friendly baby and household products which are good for the environment and are well-designed.<br />

Yeah, I know there's nothing food-related in this post, but I just wanted to share this series on AOL, titled Acting Disruptive which featured her and her company. If you don't care for her or her projects, no worries, there are other actors featured in the series!<br />
<br />
But, since I'm a fan, please watch the <a href="http://on.aol.com/show/acting-disruptive-517953113/main" target="_blank">Acting Disruptive</a> featuring Jessica Alba, if anything, you'll probably learn something new!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5267363675616972415.post-81054754846841415642013-10-10T06:02:00.001-07:002013-10-10T06:05:01.647-07:00Wannabe Baker: Puff Pastry Apple Tarts = YUM!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I got really hungry earlier and couldn't find something sweet to nibble on, then I suddenly remembered that I had a pack of puff pastry in the fridge. YAY for impromptu apple tarts for wannabe bakers like me!<br />
<br />
This was actually my first time baking anything using puff pastry, and I must say, it was yummy and easy! I got the recipe from <a href="http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/05/quick-easy-and-yummy-apple-tart/" target="_blank">thepioneerwoman.com</a> and just added a bit of cinnamon to the apples and butter on top of the tart. People at home loved it and were asking for more :)<br />

Tip: Puff Pastry is a bit hard to find in the Philippines. I bought mine from Shopwise Cubao and I've seen S&R carry them (but they'd probably be more expensive)</div>

It's pretty weird sounding, right? This type of food may be common in the middle east/ Mediterranean but I can guarantee that most Pinoys haven't even heard of it. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had the chance to try out the dish from Cafe Mediterranean at the Powerplant over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised by how it tasted. The Wikipedia description posted above is fairly accurate in my opinion. The texture was a bit like runny spaghetti sauce without the meat and it tasted a bit like it too. They poached an egg over the mixture which, in my opinion, made it tastier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Would I order it again? Maybe. It was too much like spaghetti sauce, albeit with slivers of onion and chillies, and I thought that I could easily (hehe) recreate it at home. Still, Kudos to the Cafe Mediterranean team for adding something new (and interesting) to their menu!</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The day after trying out Ichiran Ramen, my family decided to go out and look for Menya Musashi to try their noodles. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> So we braved the cold, early spring weather and went out to the Shinjuku station area to find the shop.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Menya Musashi serves their ramen in a different type of soup base but it was also good. (IMO) the experience was better in Ichiran, maybe because it was weirder / unique? To be fair, the pork was better here (lamang ng mga 5 paligo :)), and you could actually see the ramen being prepared in front of you. Also, the ramen guys knew right away that we needed help so they guided us through the vending machine ordering system (what do they even call those?)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I read that you have to line up for 30 mins to an hour during lunchtime for their noodles. Luckily, we went there at around 9 PM and it was so cold that only a few Japanese yuppies bothered to brave the winds for the ramen :) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Tip: The restaurant is tiny and there's only 1 counter available for the diners (which seats around 20 people). It was a simple 2 course dinner where you got to choose whether to get an appetizer, main, or a dessert.<br />

The food was good for a show-bundled meal. My father liked the fish course (as usual) while I liked the ravioli (as usual). My sister had veal as her main and it was a bit gamey but the presentation was good. </div>

The chocolate mousse with mint sauce was the best part of the meal but it was too thick and had to be shared (which was a good thing). </div>

From the theater entrance, turn left until you see Hudson's Place (St) on your right. Turn right at Hudson's Place and go straight till you see Bridge Place (St.). Look for the Double Tree by Hilton hotel. The restaurant is around 5 -10 minutes away from the theater. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Tokyo Ramen Review: Ichiran Ramen in Shinjuku Tokyo</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Being a huge fan of noodles, I've always wanted to try out authentic Ramen from Japan. I had the chance to do a ramen hunt during the long weekend (April 2012) and had a blast researching shops to try in Tokyo.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I read up on various blogs and must-try lists online and narrowed the list to about 3. Unfortunately, we only had a few days in Japan so we were only able to go to 2 which were both located in the Shinjuku area.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The 1st shop was Ichiran Ramen - this was the weirdest restaurant I've ever been in. Diners had to wait outside of a curtained area with a panel with flashing lights - which indicate whether a seat is unoccupied. Once you see that a seat is free you can proceed inside to your "stall". Get the ramen option form, and indicate your add-ons (ex. tamago, kakuni) . (BTW, you'd have already paid for the ramen at the vending machine located at the restaurant entrance). After choosing your add-ons you press a button near the wooden/bamboo partition separating you from the kitchen. The cook will then open the partition take your order, and then all you'll have to do is wait for your ramen while staring at the wooden/bamboo curtain in front of you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">All of those ^ would be annoying, if it weren't for the fact that you're there for the experience and you'll be able to taste the best Ramen in existence (I'm biased, What can I say?) After about 5 minutes of waiting, the cook will place your steaming bowl of noodles in your "personal" stall and you'll be able to enjoy the meaty soupy goodness of it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Price: Around P300 (Philippine Pesos)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Where is Ichiran Ramen Located? I really have no clue. A family friend brought us there and I think we got lost for quite a bit. All I know is it's located in the Shinjuku Area and it's in a basement of a nondescript building :/</span><br />

This enabled us to go to various Asian destinations for a relatively lower rate than if we booked the flights through different airlines.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But come to think of it, if we had waited a bit more we would have been able to get cheaper direct flights from Manila to Siem Reap via Cebu Pacific Air. We had to fly with Bangkok Airways to get to Cambodia AND upon arrival at BKK we had to run to get to the boarding gate for Siem Reap since it was all the way in the other side of the airport.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, Siem Reap is a quaint town filled with tourists. The attractions are concentrated near the temple complexes while the restaurants are concentrated near the Pub St. area. The food was good and I liked how they spiced their meats, it was similar to Filipino Food and Thai Food.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also tried lotus seeds when we were driving from Tonle Sap to the hotel. I asked our guide to buy some from vendors along the side of the lotus fields. These seeds taste like peanuts and water chestnuts. Honestly, I couldn't finish a pod and my sister did not want any so we had to give it away :)</div>

They get the seeds by halving the pod and then digging out the seeds with their fingers.</div>

The trip was relaxing and was a welcome distraction / adventure apart from work :)</div>

<br />
I learned about the Hello Kitty Cafe in Taipei when I was doing research for this trip. So since we didn't have anything to do, we just decided to have pm snacks aka merienda there.<br />
<br />
The place was super cute but a bit pricey, as they also require all patrons to buy at least NT$300 worth of food and beverages to dine inside the restaurant. It was fun, coz we were all cooing over the presentation of the cakes. Taste-wise it wasn't earth shattering, but I guess what you're really paying for is the ambience and the experience.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Overall, our experience at the Hello Kitty Cafe was fun and memorable, mostly because of the whole look and feel of the place. If you're in Taiwan and you're a Kitty fan you should try it out! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><b>Where is the Hello Kitty Cafe (Taipei) located?</b><br />
<br />
The Hello Kitty Cafe is located near the Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT Stop. Take Exit 3 and walk towards the intersection of Da An Road, Sec 1. Turn right. The cafe can be seen on your right. It's unmissable since it's pink and has Hello Kitty decor all over :))Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5267363675616972415.post-39400315559646132532011-09-21T20:22:00.000-07:002011-09-21T20:22:21.185-07:00Visa RantIt's unfair that we have to get visas for most of the countries in the western hemisphere. And it's molto expensivo, Hello?! since everyone's calling the Philippines a 3rd world country, why not impose 3rd world visa fees? Am I right? or am I right? end.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5267363675616972415.post-88924056524137626952011-07-27T00:41:00.000-07:002011-07-27T00:41:43.005-07:00Filipino Food Reviews: Updates? What Updates?Was out for the whole month of June and part of July for something work related. It was pretty tiring but it was also a great experience to travel to different places in the Philippines, and to talk with different people from all sorts of backgrounds. I've learned a lot from the stories they shared, mostly regarding their businesses and I realized that there is no single formula for success. Everyone finds their own path to greatness. Some may take years to reach their goal, while others achieve it immediately. Basta, it was fun and educational, But it took time away from my blogging...<br />
<br />
So. updates on food blogging? I have a few ones lined up, but for now, I'm posting a picspam from the Field :D<br />

And here, Party = Lechon, so you can imagine the amount of lechon that we have during the holiday season.<br />
<br />
Last December for example, we had around 3 for the whole month and (of course) had a lot of leftovers. Since we were tired of eating lechon paksiw after parties, we decided to make sisig (YUM!).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here is how we made our homemade sisig:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Ingredients : Leftover lechon, Green Chillies, Onions, Chicharon, Worcestershire Sauce, Mayonnaise, Soy Sauce, Calamansi</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 1: Fry the leftover lechon and chop it "sisig-style"</div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 2: Chop onions, green chillies and crush the chicharon </div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 3: Put everything in a microwaveable container</div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 4: Squeeze 1 calamansi, Put mayonnaise, soy sauce and worcestershire sauce</div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 5: Mix well</div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 6: Pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes</div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 7: Serve and enjoy!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
Happy New Year!<br />
<br />
Here is another Metro Manila restaurant review about a new establishment at Eastwood - O'Sonho.<br />
The main fare at this resto is Portuguese comfort food. Here are a few pics of the food we ordered:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd7lHz9qZUDsYHq6M4FQQYFn0wNeiL6EfUkBJr3uC8KIhjnK_mZP3iQst5lhvFdAHLTi9fGZe3mbyox9K-0EoJrYsaDD024k0S5xCHTv6NsOMqgEwznXPleuy17zm1-eFGuh1OuyIsezTC/s1600/IMG01074-20101003-1932.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd7lHz9qZUDsYHq6M4FQQYFn0wNeiL6EfUkBJr3uC8KIhjnK_mZP3iQst5lhvFdAHLTi9fGZe3mbyox9K-0EoJrYsaDD024k0S5xCHTv6NsOMqgEwznXPleuy17zm1-eFGuh1OuyIsezTC/s320/IMG01074-20101003-1932.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Caldo Verde - Though, this doesn't look like much, it was yummy, green and supposedly healthy! It's made from KALE leaves and is very popular with the Portuguese (accdng to their menu)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Paella - It was a bit dry for my taste, but my parents loved it esp the "tutong"</div>

BUT, the food is just OK. It's the typical (from my experience) diner-type food - you have fries, burgers, hotdogs, onion rings. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">After we ate, I actually thought of eating another meal at the pizzeria, because I wasn't satisfied with the burgers.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
